week 18

Although most of the trees in Toronto are covered in green buds, north of the city, where I live, the spring growth has barely begun. This photograph of a section of forest is an in-camera multiple exposure, with nine separate images captured on one frame, each slightlly out of register. The final result, which I digitally converted to black and white, expresses the stark, chaotic, overlapping configurations of bare branches and trunks of winter trees. This is probably the last week of the season that such an image could be made...next week there should be some evidence of spring growth and colour.
