week 8

WEEK 8: COTTAGE, MUSKOKA, ONTARIO
Most of the rural maibloxes near my cottage are plain grey, but this one, a few doors away, is unique because of it's colour. Although I've walked or driven past it countless times, I never thought to photograph it until I started this project. There was too much glare on the metal on sunny days, so I waited for an overcast sky to shoot it. I liked the contrast of the yellow and red against the green trees, but didn't want the detail in the background to be distracting, so I selected an aperture that would give very shallow depth of field. My main interests, aside from the colour, were the curved shape of the mailbox and the hinges, so I chose a camera position and lens that would emphasize those elements. The result became a graphic design photograph that is of a mailbox, but not is not about a mailbox.
