architectural Geometry

Architectural features can often provide the perfect elements for making images which are abstract or graphic in design. I look for colourful walls, decorative elements, interesting signage, and shadows, and then arrange these various features in the frame as I look through the viewfinder. When there is a bright blue sky or an interesting cloud, I will use those as well.

By disregarding the labels "wall" or "shadow" etc. and simply working with areas of contrasting tone or colour, I arrange these within the frame and place them in ways that I find pleasing. Cutting off parts of things, even if they are no longer identifiable, is fine with me, as long as the shape works in the composition.

Many of these images were made in Arizona and other parts of the American Southwest. The vivid skies, harsh light, and colourful adobe walls lend themselves to this kind of photography.
